Sound Design
Sound elements were created and selected to establish the environment, reinforce actions on screen and support the darker atmosphere of the sequence.
FILM AUDIO • SOUND DESIGN • COMPOSITION
A complete audio recreation of the Pale Man sequence from Pan's Labyrinth. The project involved rebuilding the scene's soundtrack through original sound design, Foley, dialogue, effects and composition before editing, mixing and mastering the finished audiovisual piece.
01 — OVERVIEW
This project involved recreating the audio for the Pale Man sequence from Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. The scene was treated as a complete film-audio exercise, with the soundtrack rebuilt using newly created and edited audio rather than relying on the original scene's finished sound mix.
Sound design, effects, Foley, dialogue and original composition were brought together to support the movement, atmosphere and dramatic timing of the sequence. The resulting material was edited and synchronised to picture before being mixed and mastered as a finished audiovisual piece.
02 — FINAL PROJECT
The completed sequence brings the individual elements of the project together into the final film-audio redesign. Headphones or full-range speakers are recommended for playback.
Final Pale Man sequence with recreated sound design, Foley, dialogue, effects, composition, mix and master.
03 — AUDIO REDESIGN
The final soundtrack combines multiple areas of audio production, allowing the scene to be approached as a complete post-production project rather than as an isolated composition or sound-design exercise.
01
Sound elements were created and selected to establish the environment, reinforce actions on screen and support the darker atmosphere of the sequence.
02
Foley was used to reinforce physical movement and interactions, helping connect detailed sound events directly to actions within the picture.
03
Dialogue formed part of the reconstructed soundtrack and was edited alongside the other elements to sit naturally within the redesigned scene.
04
Original musical material was used alongside the sound design to support the pacing, tension and dramatic progression of the scene.
05
Audio elements were edited and positioned against picture so that movement, effects, dialogue and musical events remained synchronised with the visual sequence.
06
The completed soundtrack was balanced and processed as a cohesive mix before final loudness and mastering work prepared the audiovisual piece for delivery.
04 — WORKFLOW
The project required creative sound work and technical post-production to operate as a single workflow, moving from analysis of the scene through to final delivery.
01
The sequence was assessed to identify important actions, transitions, dialogue and moments requiring musical or sound-design support.
02
Foley, effects, dialogue and musical material were assembled to create the individual layers required for the redesigned soundtrack.
03
Material was edited against picture and synchronised with the timing and movement of the film sequence.
04
Audio processing and restoration tools were used where required to prepare and shape material for the final mix.
05
Dialogue, effects, Foley and music were balanced to create a coherent soundtrack while maintaining clarity between the different audio elements.
06
Final mastering prepared the completed soundtrack for delivery, including loudness management using LUFS metering.
05 — CREATIVE APPROACH
Recreating the soundtrack required each audio element to work in relation to the picture. Foley and effects needed to reinforce visible actions, while environmental sound helped establish the space around the characters.
Composition provided another layer of storytelling, allowing musical material to support tension and pacing without replacing the detailed sound work occurring within the scene. Mixing then brought these layers together so that dialogue, effects, Foley and music could operate as a single soundtrack.
06 — POST PRODUCTION
The final stage focused on turning the individual sound elements into a cohesive film mix. Levels and processing were managed across dialogue, Foley, effects and composition while preserving the dynamic requirements of the scene.
FINAL DELIVERY
The completed soundtrack was mastered using LUFS metering to control perceived loudness and prepare the final audiovisual piece to an appropriate delivery level.
